8 states vote in key primary elections: Live updates

Democratic California gubernatorial candidate Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom speaks during his primary election night gathering on June 5, 2018 in San Francisco, California.

Democratic Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom secured one of the top two spots in the California gubernatorial election.

Newsom, speaking at his election night gathering tonight, thanked his supporters and shared his vision for the future.

“California’s vision and America’s values are one in the same, but our values, as you know, are under assault,” he said.

“We are engaged in an epic battle and it looks like voters will have a real choice this November between a governor who is going to stand up to Donald Trump and a foot solider in his war on California.”

During his speech, Newsom reflected on the legacy of Robert Kennedy on the 50th anniversary of his death.

“It’s our duty to future generations to keep dreaming, to keep disrupting and to keep demanding more,” he said. “See for me, ‘Courage for a change’ is more than just a campaign slogan. It’s always been and always will be California’s truest calling.”
