DRUG gangs are copying gangsters from US crime dramas like The Wire as violence on London’s streets spirals out of control, locals have warned.
The fears come as detectives launched a murder probe into the death of a 35-year-old knifed to death over the weekend.
Albanian national Edmond Jonuzi was stabbed in North London on Saturday night – collapsing and dying near Turnpike Lane Tube station after being attacked in a nearby park at around 9.30pm.
His murder – over a suspected drug debt – brings the death toll in the capital to 78 so far this year.
One local said gangsters were recruiting new members in broad daylight who stashed cannabis in lampposts and his neighbours’ front gardens.
He said: “It’s definitely very corporate. I think they get a lot of things from The Wire.”
The Wire is a HBO series that focuses on drug dealing and murder in West Baltimore, Maryland.
The popular crime drama is known for its portrayal of drug trafficking, and how seamlessly the empire is run.
The local said the core group included about ten people, adding: “As much as I sympathise with the police if you were to stand here for two minutes you would start to see the patterns.
“There’s no competition, it’s all one gang. You see them come in from the Tube and on the bus.”
Police have been searching the scene near Turnpike Lane Tube station, setting up a forensic tent and photographing evidence.
They believe the victim was stabbed during an altercation with two groups of men.
Scotland Yard confirmed they had been called to Green Lanes, near the Turnpike Lane station, just before 10pm on Saturday June 9.
Detective Inspector Garry Moncrieff said: “It would appear that an altercation occurred between two groups of males in the Ducketts Common area.
“Edmond was stabbed during that altercation.”
He said that the 35-year-old had been pronounced dead at the scene.
Next of kin have been informed. A post-mortem examination will be arranged in due course.
It comes as London was yesterday gripped by another string of bloody attacks, with three men stabbed within just hours of each other.
